The Short Version

If this page is your first introduction to Stunio, start here.

What Stunio Is

GVSU's own early-talent platform. Post a role and it is matched to vetted, available students who accept in one tap - with scheduling, credential checks, check-in, and pay handled end to end.

What We Heard

Meijer Gardens needs people in five distinct places - food & beverage and events, volunteers, guest relations, horticulture, and education. We turned each into a lane you can open at your own speed.

Why Now

This fall, the student networks at GVSU, Calvin, and GRCC come fully online in the Grand Rapids region - tens of thousands of verified students, minutes from your grounds.

Our Recommendation
Open Lane 1 this fall. Run Lane 2 in parallel.

Start Food & Beverage and Events at pilot level, timed to the fall semester when the area college networks come fully online - it is your most urgent stated need. Alongside it, begin Volunteer Program Management, which can start sooner - it is the problem no one else is solving for you.

That said, this recommendation comes from one conversation, and you know Meijer Gardens better than we do. This is a menu, not a package: pick one lane, several, or something we have not thought of yet. You set the width of the road and the speed.

The Five Lanes

Each lane came directly from our conversation. Open one to see what it looks like on Stunio, what starting small means, and what we would measure together. Pick one lane, several, or something we have not thought of yet.

1 · Food & Beverage and Events
Experience Recommended Start
Servers, bartenders, and dishwashers for concerts, weddings, private events, and daily operations.
What We Heard

What was once seasonal is now a year-round need. Servers, bartenders, and dishwashers are consistently hard to fill across concerts, weddings, private events, and daily cafe and concession operations - and the team is still thinking in headcount when the real question is hours.

On Stunio

Post shifts by the hours needed - fixed times for events, flexible windows for operations. Stunio matches verified students by availability, location, and interest, confirms food-handling and alcohol-service credentials before anyone can accept, and handles check-in, verification, and payment. You see who showed up, how they performed, and who you want back.

Start Small

A 60-day pilot: staff three events, or one recurring need such as weekend concessions. Fixed scope, one department, one supervisor as point of contact.

Go Full

Stunio becomes the standing bench across the calendar: event surges, weekly shifts, and a growing pool of returning students your managers already know and rate. Hours-based posting replaces headcount guessing.

What We'd Measure Together
  • Fill rate and time-to-fill on posted shifts
  • Show rate and supervisor ratings
  • Repeat rate: students coming back for more shifts
What We Need From Meijer Gardens
  • One supervisor as pilot point of contact
  • Three target events or one recurring need, with dates
  • Credential requirements confirmed per role
2 · Volunteer Program Management
Experience Can Start Sooner
Episodic volunteer scheduling plus a pipeline of younger volunteers, in one system.
What We Heard

About 650 volunteers call Meijer Gardens home, with an average age of 69. Volunteering is becoming episodic rather than long-term, scheduling still runs on phone calls and disparate spreadsheets, and there is no pipeline of younger volunteers who might boomerang back later in life.

On Stunio

Volunteer opportunities post like any other role - unpaid, episodic, sized to the day or the event. Students see them in the app and accept in one tap; existing volunteers onboard into the same system so scheduling, reminders, and check-in happen in one place instead of by phone. One view of everyone: students, current volunteers, and hours.

Start Small

A 60-day pilot in one program area: post episodic volunteer opportunities to area students and onboard a starter group of current volunteers for scheduling through the platform.

Go Full

All volunteer scheduling runs through one system - student volunteers flowing in each semester, episodic sign-ups filling gaps, and phone-call scheduling retired.

What We'd Measure Together
  • Volunteer hours scheduled through the platform vs. by phone
  • New student volunteers recruited during the pilot
  • Administrative time saved by the volunteer team
What We Need From Meijer Gardens
  • One program area, chosen by your volunteer team
  • A starter group of current volunteers willing to schedule through the app
  • A point person from volunteer services
3 · Guest Relations
Experience
Guest-facing staff from the moment a visitor arrives to the moment they leave.
What We Heard

Everybody who touches the guest, from arrival to departure, is an opportunity area. Peak days, exhibitions, and the concert series create guest-facing staffing needs that rise and fall faster than traditional hiring can follow.

On Stunio

Guest relations shifts post with flexible windows sized to visitation - weekends, peak season, exhibition openings. Students who have already worked at Meijer Gardens and rated well get matched first, so guest-facing roles skew toward people who already know the institution.

Start Small

A 30–60 day pilot covering weekend or peak-day guest services shifts in one venue area - admissions, wayfinding, or event guest support.

Go Full

A standing pool of returning students who know the grounds and the guest experience, deployed dynamically as visitation demands, with ratings deciding who comes back.

What We'd Measure Together
  • Shifts filled on peak days vs. prior approach
  • Supervisor ratings on guest-facing readiness
  • Share of shifts filled by returning students
What We Need From Meijer Gardens
  • One venue area and a set of peak dates to pilot
  • A guest services lead as point of contact
  • A short orientation outline for guest-facing standards
4 · Horticulture & Grounds
Experience → Advance
Gardeners and grounds crew, no plant expertise required, with a path toward field-of-study talent.
What We Heard

Gardeners and outdoor crew work year-round and do not need to be plant experts to contribute. There is a natural connection to students who want to work outside - and over time, to degree programs at area colleges for those who want horticulture as a career.

On Stunio

Grounds and gardening roles post as recurring shifts or defined projects - spring plantings, seasonal changeovers, event grounds prep. The platform surfaces students who selected outdoor and hands-on work as interests. Students who keep coming back become known quantities your horticulture team can develop.

Start Small

Pilot one seasonal push: a defined grounds project or a set of recurring weekly shifts with five to ten students over 60 days.

Go Full

A rolling bench for grounds work across all seasons, plus a deliberate track with partner colleges to route horticulture-interested students toward deeper engagements with your team.

What We'd Measure Together
  • Fill rate on grounds shifts and projects
  • Repeat rate across the season
  • Students expressing interest in longer-term horticulture engagements
What We Need From Meijer Gardens
  • One seasonal project or recurring shift set, with dates
  • A grounds supervisor as point of contact
  • Basic onsite orientation and equipment guidance
5 · Education & Summer Programming
Experience → Advance
Educators for summer camps and programming, including teachers on summer break.
What We Heard

Summer camps and educational programming pull in teachers who are off for the summer and do not want full-time work, alongside a broader need for reliable, episodic educators season after season.

On Stunio

Camp and program educator roles post ahead of the season with defined dates. Education-interested students see them alongside your returning educators; the platform holds both groups in one place so scheduling and verification work the same way for each. Background checks are confirmed before anyone accepts.

Start Small

Pilot next program season: post a defined set of camp educator and program assistant roles ahead of time and fill them through the platform.

Go Full

Season-over-season educator staffing in one system: returning teachers, education majors building classroom-adjacent experience, and a bench that is already vetted when planning starts each year.

What We'd Measure Together
  • Educator and assistant roles filled ahead of season start
  • Returning educator retention season over season
  • Education-major students entering the pipeline
What We Need From Meijer Gardens
  • Next season's program calendar and role list
  • An education programming lead as point of contact
  • Screening requirements confirmed per role

On cost: pricing is flexible and partner-friendly, shaped together around the lanes and level you choose. Nothing on this page commits Meijer Gardens to anything beyond the pilot we scope side by side.
